Composed by Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907)

1875 (as part of the incidental music for the play Peer Gynt)

Peer Gynt Suite extracted in 1888

Title:  Åses død (The Death of Åse)

Date of my arrangement:  2015

Duration:  3:38 minutes

Instrumentation:  S.A.T.B.B.GB.Cb.

Solo and tutti sections for each part.

May also be played with one player per part, although you will lose some of the dynamic contrasts.

In the play Peer Gynt, Åse is the mother of Peer Gynt.   Grieg scored this beautiful lament using only strings, with mutes (except for the bass).  In my arrangement the simple melody is repeated three times — first by Bass 1 recorders, then Tenor, and finally by Alto and Soprano.
