page 20 of the score
Composed by Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829 - 1869
Composed 1857, published 1860
Date of my arrangement: 2016
Duration: 6:08 minutes
Instrumentation: T.T.T.B.B.B.GB.Cb. / S.A.T.T.B.B.GB.Cb. with instrument changes
Tenor 3 becomes Soprano, Bass 3 becomes Alto. Solo and tutti sections for each part. May also be played with one player per part, although you will lose some of the dynamic contrasts.
This piece incorporates two themes (one borrowed from a Puerto Rican folk song) and uses a combination of Latin and Afro-American rhythms . It begins and ends in a simple manner with low recorders. Over time the rhythms become increasingly complex and interesting as the texture becomes more dense with the addition of higher recorders. It's very joyful music and reminds me of a parade and a carnival.
