There Was a Pig Went Out to DIG
page 3 of the score
The melody for this traditional English tune was collected in Lancashire by Marianne Harriet Mason who published her book Nursery Rhymes and Country Songs in 1878. Percy Grainger used her melody to create and arrangement for 4-part chorus.
Date of my arrangement: 2018
Duration: 1:55 minutes
Instrumentation: Si.S.A.T.B.GB.Cb.
Solo and tutti sections. May also be played with one player per part, although you will lose some of the dynamic contrasts.
My arrangement for recorder orchestra is based on Percy Grainger’s arrangement for 4-part chorus. The composition begins with a simple melody, and each additional verse has more rhythmic interest. There’s even a polyphonic section. I transposed the last two verses, making it possible for each part to play melodic lines.
